What if Tower Hamlets had

the Right to Grow?

What could a Right to Grow mean for Tower Hamlets?

Right to Grow in Tower Hamlets is about unlocking access to land for community food growing — turning underused spaces into hubs of wellbeing, resilience, and local action.

It supports residents and groups to:

  • Identify and use public land for growing

  • Secure space with fair terms and long-term options

  • Build stronger, healthier communities through shared growing, cooking, and learning

  • Respond to climate and social challenges with local solutions

  • Protect and sustain spaces like community gardens for future generations

At its heart, it’s about making it easier for our communities to green our neighbourhoods, grow together, and shape the future of our local environment.

What is the Right to Grow?

The Right to Grow is a piece of legislation developed by Incredible Edible that is being made available to councils to adopt and adapt to their local circumstances.

The Right to Grow requires local authorities to maintain a free, accessible map of all public land that is suitable for community cultivation or wildlife projects. And to make it straight-forward for community groups to secure free leases and allow those groups to bid for the land should the authority decide to sell it.
